Bang - pop - deafening applause, followed by twinkling confetti as it danced its way overhead to meet the standing ovation and roars of adoration from the audience - what a performance!
Shall we rewind a bit? This year's School play was none other than the infamous Chicago, and it definitely didn't disappoint. Founders' Hall was transformed into a decadent speakeasy: sumptuous fabrics lined the walls, the mirrored cocktail bar and its mixologists greeted guests (most of who donned 1920s attire adding to the immersive theatrical spectacle) as the band, singers and local entourage (drama students all in character, some of who would have given Daniel Day Lewis a run for his money) invited us into their world.
After we sipped cocktails and mingled with the 'locals' we were invited to take our seats in the Arundel Centre (our performing arts theatre) which too had undergone a metamorphosis. The lights dimmed, the master of ceremonies welcomed, no implored us all, to sit back and get ready to be wowed by the talents and tales that were about to unfold.
To summarise it was an awe inspiring performance and effort by all those involved: the choreography, theatrical direction, set design, live orchestra (oh, did I forget to mention that students and a few teachers, made up the musical accompaniment for the show?) lighting and special effects just blew us all away (pun intended; cue music from Cell Block Tango, 'He Had it Comin'...').
